‘Peak Oil?–’ What Took You So Long?!?

Sometimes you have to wonder.

Today The Independent published an article entitled “Warning: Oil supplies are running out fast.”

What I’m wondering  is this: Is this article an old re-tread on a slow news day, or did this savvy reporter JUST find out about the idea that the world’s most abudant (read: cheap) energy supply is drying up?

It seems hard to believe that this is a recycled story.  There are so many other important news items to be discussed each day.

No, I don’t mean the color of Britney’s underwear.  Nor do I mean Jessica’s weight-gain-loss yo-yo.  I realize that those headlines are of the utmost importance, but other things are happening in the world.

I’m talking about the impact of Israeli-Palestinean relations, the Uighur uprising in China, or even such boring topics as the Russia-China-Iran alliance.

But Peak Oil?

Mr. Connor lays out the sky is falling drama in this opener: “The world is heading for a catastrophic energy crunch that could cripple a global economic recovery because most of the major oil fields in the world have passed their peak production, a leading energy economist has warned.”

Right.  I agree completely.  Finite resources + mass consumption = depletion.

The problem with the article isn’t the gloom and doom.  It is the feelgood solution of “[w]hat we need to do is accelerate the mobilisation of renewables, energy efficiency and alternative transport.”

I’ve got news for you.  It’s too late for that.  That was the solution had we begun preparing in 1992.  It is now 2009.  Things aren’t so good right now.

It is now time (possibly past time) to begin personal preparations in earnest.  Forget about depending on your government (Katrina victims have a great story to tell in that regard!)

Your life and the lives of your family members are at stake.  I’m sure that you’d like me to paint some rosy la-la picture, but the immediate and longterm future are bleak.

So get off of your rear-end and start preparing.

So, Steve Connor, I do appreciate your cutting edge journalism on this subject.  Alright, I apologize for the sarcasm.  It is likely that the average citizen truly doesn’t know the extent to which we are emperiled, and your article may actually enlighten a few of those that live under a rock.
